SCORE!

Lash,

I would like to thank you and the Viking Spirit Fund contributors for the recent donation of $1700. The athletic department decided to put the money towards a new score board in the gym. The score board was ordered and is now installed. The unit actually consists of two electronic boards; one attached to the west wall and one attached to the east wall of the gym. The basketball team has already put the new score board to the test in a recent tournament hosted by the Vikings. It is definitely a great addition to our sports complex. I have attached two pictures of the new boards.

Our next project is to consider the addition of a audio visual system for gymnasium. It would consist of two screens and two LCD projectors (home and visitors) that would be attached to the rafters and would be controlled by wireless remotes. Computers would then be used to display PowerPoint presentations, videos and the like. There is even talk of a possible satellite TV feed. Coaches, teachers and administrators can think of hundreds of applications for the new system.

In other news, I hope you are able to open the third attachment that is included with this message. Yes, it is a picture of USC Head Football Coach Lane Kiffin along with Julie Main (administrator) and Cindy Foley (bookkeeper). Coach Kiffin was recently on campus to visit with Downey Head Coach Jack Williams and Downey¹s senior linebacker Jabari Ruffin. Jabari has made a verbal commitment to become a Trojan next year. Needless to say the lunchtime visit caused quite a stir on campus.

Thanks again for the generous donation. It is good to know that the "Viking Spirit" is alive and well in the hearts and minds of the graduating classes of the 1950s.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours,

Gordon

Help Keep the Dreams Alive!

Vikings,

Several weeks ago, I wrote a letter stating my thoughts about setting up a "Viking Spirit Fund" for the Downey High athletic program.

Fifty years ago we were students at Downey High and never thought about how our school programs would survive in the future. Today, the school looks great, but Downey, like most schools, needs help and we can be that support.

Jerry Quigley '56 and Bob Uzez '57 have started things off with their $100 contributions.

I have contacted Rochelle Rapada at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank in San Mateo, California, and set up a savings account. We now have over $500 in the account. If you would like to contribute any amount to the fund, please send a check to Lash Stevenson, Viking Spirit Fund. I will then send a cashier's check and the names of the contributors to Gordan Weisenburger, assistant football coach and Activities Director for Downey High School.

I am asking that all contributions be sent to me by September 1, 2011.

This account will stay open for future contributions.

My address is as follows:
